Simple Sample Slouch Hat

I have too many patterns in my head, so I'm going to force myself to do a run of hat patterns. It's a good time to do that, right? You still have a little time to get your hooks busy for those last minute patterns.

This one is a bit unusual, but nothing extreme. It uses baby yarn, or sport weight, and mainly treble stitches. I really like the way it sits on my head - it isn't obtrusive or heavy. The brim also keeps it on my head, so I don't have that all too familiar problem of it falling off any time I look in a different direction.

A "sampler" is just a pattern that uses multiple stitches or techniques. They're a great way to get some practice in without committing to doing a whole project in a new or unfamiliar stitch.

Simple Sampler Slouch
- used Caron One Pounder Baby
- used "J" and "H" Bates hooks
- used size 18 tapestry needle for ends
- simple multiple of 2 to in/decrease

**This particular pattern uses the chain instead of my usual chain 3, treble in same stitch method. The purpose of the pattern is to be slightly loose and open. The extra chain makes the seam look bulky and weird.

Round 1: With "J" hook: Magic Circle > chain 4, 14 tr. connect with slip stitch to top of chain 4. close circle. (15 tr)

Round 2: chain 4, tr in same stitch. 2 tr in each stitch around. connect with slip stitch to top of chain 4. (30)

Round 3: chain 4, tr in same stitch. tr in next stitch. (2 tr, tr) around. connect with slip stitch to top of chain 4. (45)

Round 4: chain 4, tr in same stitch. tr in next 2 stitches. (2tr, tr, tr) around. connect with slip stitch to top of chain 4. (60)

Round 5 - 8: chain 4. tr in next stitch. tr in each stitch around. connect with slip stitch to top of chain 4. (60)

Round 9 - 11: With "H" hook: chain 3. dc in next stitch. dc in each stitch around. (60)

Round 12: chain 1, 2hdcpuff. 2hdcpuff in each stitch around. (60)
*This is like a 2hdctog or 2hdcdec except that it's done in one stitch.

Round 13: chain 1. sc in next stitch. sc in each stitch around. (60)

Notes:
~ If you're good with controlling your tension, you could do this with one hook. The first half would be done with loose tension and then tighten toward the end.

Modifications:
~ If you want more slouch, you could A) do more increase rounds, B) do more Round 5, or C) both.
~ If you want more brim, repeat more Round 12.
~ If you want more of the edge, do more Round 13.
~ Like the look but don't want a slouch? Eliminate Round 4 and subtract 15 from the stitch count of each consecutive round.

The oddly orienting curse continues...
This is just a close up of the stitches around the brim.

It sits easily and comfortably on my forehead.
It also doesn't try to crawl backward, which is nice.

A view from the side.
It's not SUPER SLOUCHY by any means, but I like the look.
This particular hat has already been washed and came out super soft.
As for warmth, it's comfy but not hot. The gapey feel allows heat to escape but the smaller stitches closer to the brim traps heat around ears and back of neck.

Thanks for coming by! Enjoy your hat! Check back tomorrow for another free pattern!
I know, I promised you the great and wonderful pattern today, but it's taking a little longer for my pictures to load than I expected. It IS picture-heavy though.
